I'm the same way generally speaking. I'm not adverse to changes being made. There are worthwhile changes. However more often than not the change we see is change for the sake of change and there is a loss of functionality that makes things more difficult. Stripping down the number of options in GUI for instance might make sense. However it probably makes more sense to hide features that only the top 1% might use. It makes no sense to hide the features everybody will use only 1% of the time. The later makes it extremely difficult for the masses to accomplish less frequently done tasks. Whats is worse is that those tasks tend to be difficult to remember for the masses as it is because they aren't done that frequently. Adding steps doesn't help!

I used a palm pilot for years. It was handy, reliable, and got the job done. Then the smart phones came and I resisted for years. They are nowhere near optimal for organization. However there are a few benefits.

1. merging technologies potentially reduces the stuff you carry
2. backup of critical data is MUCH MUCH MUCH easier (something I rarely did with my palm pilot)
3. there was a move to free software

Now the downside to the new tech was it didn't work well as either a phone or an organizer. The palm pilot M500 series + flip phone took up about the same amount of space as one of these new fangled smart phones. The smart phones were more complicated and prone to problems too! They are slower to boot up, need rebooting, have worse battery life, etc.

The old simple palm M500 /w wifi and wireless syncing would have been my preferred solution had it ever been produced. Add in a cellular phone and it would have been golden. Especially if the features were distinctly separate so there were not privacy related issues (spy capabilities/tracking/etc).
