It depends on the white list in your BIOS. It is possible that all IBM T42 laptops accept this particular card with an atheros chipset in addition to the one in your laptop. This appears to be a card that would work in your system and it would also be compatible with Trisquel.

Notice that this card might not work out of the box:

"You may also need to update your bios if you get a 802.11 error"

The actual message you would get is probably:

"1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI network card."

In that case you can attempt to update the BIOS. It is potentially dangerous to do this. You can damage your system if you make a mistake. If you get the BIOS image from IBM/Lenovo for this system it is less likely to be a problem than if you were to try hacking the BIOS yourself and getting a card to work that way.

We actually just destroyed 3-4 motherboards recently. I'm still trying to figure out where the problem is. Everything matches perfectly from what I can see and there is no hacking going on with the 4th ruined board. There is a possibility to recover in some instances although it can be tricky and may not work in all instances. You probably don't have the recovery feature in the T42.
