I'd have to dig into it again but there were some VNC based solutions where  
the people involved made the server non-free software but the clients were  
all free software. I wonder how hard it would be to pick up one of those  
clients and build a server to work with it. Maybe it wouldn't save any time  
at all...I don't know.
