I really hate compiz. I don't like the interface and it takes up way more RAM than metacity.

I have gone to the GNOME System Settings and changed to metacity using "Windows manager and effects" multiple times. However, the interface is always switched back to compiz when I log in. When I go to the "Windows manager and effects" after this, it still says I'm using metacity. The only way to actually switch it to metacity is to switch it to compiz, then back to metacity.

How can I prevent compiz from being the default at log in? I want to uninstall it but I'm afraid GNOME will try to run it anyways, rather than metacity, causing a bricked DE.
