You should contact him and tell him the benefits of licensing the fonts under  
the SIL Open Font License 1.1 or Apache 2.0 if he doesn't care what people  
are doing with it but still wants some protection. Of course there is the  
Creative Commons CC0 if he wants it basically public domain.
