Privacy laws everywhere are an illusion - the Americans proved that with
Prism. Even if your own government aren't spying on you (which they likely
are), the NSA are doing it for them.
I've actually had privacy laws used against me more often than I've been able
to use them positively (which is never). ("Sorry sir, we can't release your
medical records to your lawyer due to privacy laws").
The only solution is to implement privacy ourselves. Successive governments
all over the world have shown that they have no interest in helping us, and
even if one did it would be useless due to the NSA dragnet.
Setup your own email server.
Setup your own social pod (Diaspora, Friendica, etc.)
Setup your own XMPP server.
Use GPG.
Use Bitcoin.
If you have a blog or website, host it yourself if you can handle the
traffic.
Decentralization is the only defence we have against these things. They can
still hack us of course, but we've been making it far too easy for them by
just putting all our data out there in the "cloud". Facebook, Google, iCloud,
Dropbox, they can't be trusted. That's why the Freedombox initiative is so
important, and deserves our full support. The main reason people don't have
these servers set up at home already is that it's a pain in the ass to do,
and non-nerds don't really stand a chance. Freedombox is how we're gonna make
it happen. Not just for us in the Free Software community, who are probably
capable of setting all of this up already, but for Joe Average who doesn't
even know what Prism is.
As a community this is the single most important thing we will do with our
various skills.
