I agree with you.  gNew Sense is probably the best because it supports MIPS.   
But most people don't have MIPS computers.

gNew Sense's shortcomings in software support and user community may put off  
new users.  Trisquel has strong software support and a larger user community;  
it's the better stepping stone.  gNew Sense is the ideal.
