Below is how I installed Zotero, but please let me know if this method is
good and how I make it autoupdate when I update the system with Update
Manager.
First, I am pretty sure that Zotero is free
(http://www.zotero.org/support/licensing) and I have seen it's browser add-on
recommended on this forum. Unfortunately it is not available for installation
through Add/Remove Applications.
This is how I installed it:

downloaded the tar file, then extracted in the folder
/home/user/Zotero_linux-i686
Rightclicked on the extracted folder Zotero_linux-i686 and chose Open In
Terminal
In the terminal typed ./run* to execute the shell script run-zotero.sh
