If I had need of finding open WiFi I'd use my Android mobile and set it to  
notify me when there's one available.  The OpenWLANMap app on F-droid.org  
logs WiFi APs and their location as you go and has a 'find nearest open  
hotspot button.'  Might be better for your purposes, but I haven't used it so  
I can't be sure.
