Did you try Alt+Ctrl+ one of the F keys? Sometimes you can get a terminal and  
some error messages that way;

Maybe you can talk to your friend and he may try to install at least some gnu  
distro, maybe one of the not-so-free ones until you visit him next time and  
finish the job ;)
i think you should explain why free software is important and if he's  
interested, then you sure can help him to get as free as possible at the  
moment;
if you can't convince him then it's no use and you should leave it with  
windows.
