If I were doing this for family I would install as few non-free packages as  
possible and then load the system up with Free Software. Sure it's not ideal  
but it's easier to convert people to Free Software when they've been using a  
mostly free system.

This way you get them hooked on Free Software philosphy and eventually  
they'll stop using flash and other non-free options over time.
