Well it's took me nearly a week (my internet searching leaves a lot to be  
desired) but I finally found the developers answer.

Hi,
the current ubuntu guvcview version is broken with kernels >= 3.16, you need  
the latest version 2.0.1
You can get it from the sourceforge download (Files) section or from one of  
my ppa's:

stable: https://launchpad.net/~pj-assis/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

testing (latest git): https://launchpad.net/~pj-assis/+archive/ubuntu/testing
