I sort-of agree that it would be nice if all game data was also free, but it's nowhere near as important as having free software.

Very few games would ever be developed if it was not possible to sell the game data for profit. An entire multi-billion dollar industry has sprung up in game development for the sole reason that it is profitable. Take away the profit motive and that industry disappears overnight, and we're left with just a few low-quality volunteer part-time game projects.

The game engine, which is software, has to respect my freedoms, but the game data is just that - data. It might be a pain to fork, as you stated in another post, but at least we know it's not *doing* anything bad with our computers.
