Partitioning should not be that difficult. Here is how I partitioned my  
debian wheezy setup:

/         primary     1gb
/usr      logical     10gb
/var      logical     3gb
swap      logical     8gb
/tmp      logical     3gb
/home     logical     the rest of the hard drive (450gb or so)

hope this gives you an idea..
