GNOME certainly has add obstacles at porting it over other systems, BSD has slowdown on porting GNOME because of this.

XFCE on the other hand takes portability seriously as they describe it self as "A lightweight desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems". They even fork consolekit into consolekit2 just to keep portability, at least until systembsd is mature enough, which by the way isn't meant to be BSD-specific, so it should run fine on any Unix-like platform.
