Thanks everyone for the tips. I tried all of them. In the end it turned out  
to be something similar to the physical switch, though thankfully not as  
obvious/embarrassing: more or less trying key combinations at random I  
eventually discovered that fn+F10 toggles the thing. It's the way they keep  
you guessing...
