No, it isn't. YouTube is a video sharing site. Sharing videos is not your own computing. It's a communication service. There are advantages to self-hosting, but you don't have to for the sake of your freedom.

For the libre YouTube replacement, you want MediaGoblin. You can either run your own instance, or create an account on a public instance; if you're just publishing the videos for anyone to see, it doesn't matter.
