It's a crucially important thing that RMS emphasises in this speech. The work of the free software movement has changed character and become more difficult because it can no longer be mainly focused on building software replacements that people can use in freedom (GNU's Not Unix), but must be even more on educating people to value their own freedom.

I believe the situation is quite similar to that of the vegetarian/vegan ethical movement. While there are now more alternatives to animal products than ever, only a minority use these substitutes while the masses eat more meat than ever. And just like it's very hard to change peoples' eating habits so is it with computer and communication habits. Now, consider the work of trying to convince people of both.
