The best option for free gaming is currently an older Nvidia GPU. Some of them have had the firmware reverse-engineered. Nouveau is in constant development; the version included in newer kernels means that SuperTuxKart (I am using the 0.9 release) is reasonably playable at mid-range graphics settings. It does not have as good performance as the proprietary driver, but it is fine for films and most games. It is also in constant development, so it has improved somewhat. Considering it is reverse-engineered, it is certainly no mean feat, and I am grateful for the developers for giving us the freedom-respecting option.
