If we did not have signifiers like "free software" or "open source", there would be whole categories of things we might be able to think about in the isolation of our own minds, but we wouldn't easily be able to think about them together in dialogue, as we are doing in this thread.

Not only "think" but also "communicate" in a meaningful way. Because "free software" and "open source" stand for different values, we need both words and ought to use the one that is appropriate. If we want to be inclusive and talk about the values that are common to them, FLOSS is appropriate.
