I think the hard drive I was attempting to back up to is dying. I've tried a  
different drive and the back up seems to be going well.

I think the original drive kept on failing to read at a particular sector,  
which would explain why the back up kept on failing at the same point. If  
this back up doesn't work with the new drive, I'll post a bug report.
