Whether or not a program works well on your hardware has nothing to do with
how old or new the program is. New software is perfectly capable of being
lightweight, and old software is perfectly capable of being bloated.

You can't. That feature was removed from GNOME Terminal some time ago (I want
to say for GNOME 3.10). I don't remember for sure what the reason was, but I
want to say that it was because the code that allowed transparency wasn't
very good (caused performance issues or something).
