I am not certain it is a weak argument to write that firmware files are not  
linked to the rest of the kernel, hence not subject to the GPL (Linux's  
license). I would like to read more on the topic. Doesn't the kernel simply  
sends the firmware file to the peripheral that must execute it? That looks  
quite different to, say, a kernel module, which is definitely linked to the  
rest of the kernel.

Obfuscation of Linux drivers, on the other hand, definitely is a violation of  
the GPL.
