there needs to be a justified business case *even before beginning* the 1
full-time year required to work on an 11in design. what is the business case
- how many projected units would be purchased? who would purchase it? what
reasons would they want to purchase it? how would it be marketed to them?
what sort of money would they be prepared to pay for it?
given that it takes a full-time year of work (estimated) that translates
roughly to a cost of around $USD 30,000. now that cost has to be taken into
account in the price and quantity that's manufactured.
so if people are only prepared to pay $100 for an 11in housing, and it costs
$90 in parts and assembly, that's only $10 per unit, now we need to have
orders for 3,000 units *minimum* just to break even.
now, if somebody comes forward to sponsor the costs, that's fine - the
development costs can be factored out and it becomes much more likely to go
ahead.
