the standard helps take away some of the enormous cost (in time and money) so
that people can work on things for a long time then upgrade them later...
*WITHOUT* needing to throw away absolutely everything they've done because
it's now "too slow" if they did it as a Single-Board Computer. you still
however need to have some electronics engineering experience :)
