I don't see it as necessarily a problem to use BSD licensing. For instance
the hardware might need to combine certain proprietary designs, which might
be beneficial considering the dire lack of free hardware available, and the
design might need to combine a proprietary connector for compatibility. It is
so hard for a user to make hardware since they have no access to fabrication
tech, so from their point of view whether the design is GPL or BSD it is not
a concern. Unscrupulous manufacturer would take a GPL design anyway and make
their own device. The bottom line is that GPL doesn't really protect the
user's freedom more with hardware, since it is such a different situation to
software.
