There wasn't an error message but after the Quick Search in the step by step  
Testdisk instructions it showed a pretty large list of partitions that  
weren't able to be recovered.  I took a picture of it but the picture wasn't  
enough to capture the whole list.  I can attach it if you think that would  
help.

I forgot that I put Trisquel onto a USB first through those instructions and  
then installed it, my mistake.  I'll try the live system and let you know how  
it goes.  If it doesn't go well then I'll try the other steps you mentioned.
