Regarding firejail, run
firejail --noprofile waterfox
If that works, you can build a profile for it. The standard won't work but it  
is doable. If it doesn't... that's more complicated and you would have to  
contact the author of firejail.
Probably it will work, it's just a case of some folder being denied access to  
while being necessary. Might depend where you placed waterfox folders.
