I'm going with Belenos again because it was such a success the last time I
was asked.
New newbie is his girlfriend. I asked her if she had a laptop in the context
of a different thing we were doing together and it turns out she's very
excited because someone is giving her a nice HP but "it has so many viruses
they say it's going to cost $150 before I can even use it because they have
to...." hmm hmm hmmm what are we going to have for dinner. You can't save the
world, Heather, she doesn't want to hear it. ".....so should we wait until I
get it back from the shop? I really hate Windows 10."
So she wanted to give me the $150 just for installing Trisquel. I said no,
but you can give me a present some other time if you have money you don't
need and see something you think I'd like because I like presents.
So my relevant questions are:
If it doesn't work out for any reason, will the winshit viruses still be
there if some idiot puts winshit on the hardware? I am not going to remove
them for her. I don't love anyone that much.
She says she mainly uses her computer for photography. What are some good
libre programs that she might enjoy and find useful? Shotwell is good enough
for me so that's all I know.
Is it bad manners to plug her phone into my Belenos machine before I do
anything to make sure there won't be any problems getting her pictures? She's
never even used Ubuntu before, she just hates Windows 10 and has better
things to do with her $150. I've never carried a smartphone myself but never
had any problems getting pictures from my adult kid's flavour of the week
with my Belenos machines.
Her immediate issue is viruses. I assured her that I'm not an experienced
enough hacker to make a windows virus run through WINE or anything, but her
perception might be different if I ask her to plug her phone in a USB port of
my computer if it is common knowledge that windows viruses can be transmitted
through USB and she doesn't understand that Trisquel doesn't get windows
viruses.
For context, "Heather" isn't just a username, I really am female, and I do
not have any sort of formal IT degree or paid employment in IT.
