Switching to WebExtensions is important. It standardizes the format for browser extensions so that you can write an extension once and it will generally work in any browser that supports browser extensions.
You don't want Mozilla to keep changing the extension format, do you? WebExtensions is the last time we'll ever have to change it, because it's a standard supported by Chrome, Edge and Safari.
