Thank you for the link. I know in principle how to install MATE (through
apt-get, after maybe installing a PPA!) but I usually avoid installing more
than one desktop on a system because they often install their own
"replacements" for GUI apps I already have. If you then try to remove one of
them the system sometimes thinks you want to remove an entire desktop!
I am trying it out though on a laptop that won't run a fully-free distro
(despite my best efforts) in the form of Ubuntu MATE 16.04, and so far I'm
really impressed with it. I think it's a really good choice for T8.
