SOLVED - sort of: It turned out that the connector for the home button and  
the two touch buttons did not match.

That also explains why the 'Volume, Select and Power' combination did nit  
work!

It is possible though to replace that selector, but it requires removal of  
the screen, which I am not ready to yet.
