Just wondering, are you referring to gnu/linux before the 2000s?
or in general? That aside, desktop environments I think are lightweight/stable. XFCE and LXQT are good ones, LXQT is ugly, but meh... it works fine when I tried it recently. Love/hate issue with it though. XFCE is what I enjoy in that area :)
