Audacious probably did some reverse engineering to make .ape files work.
In my personal opinion though, I use mpv, ever since Supertramp said how bloat VLC was, I looked at other options and I finally decided on mpv. :)
It works well with website urls too. ;) I bet it could run .ape files too.
