Install alsa-utils if it is not installed already, and run
$ alsamixer
Press F6 and select your laptop's sound card. Make sure that the Master
volume is unmuted and turned up. With your headphones unplugged, do the same
with the Speaker volume. With your headphones plugged in, do the same for
the Headphone volume.
Then, run
$ speaker-test
and see if white noise plays. Try this both with and without headphones
plugged in.
