If the user changes anything on https://duckduckgo.com/settings a cookie is stored, so that the changes are locally saved and can be applied for the subsequent searches.

I do not have any problem with DDG incrementing a trisquel counter, but as pointed by andyprough (and he deserves all credit for that) this is not a matter of trusting people to honor their promise, this is a matter of understanding what is going where. If something does not need to be sent, why send it by default? If some innocuous data has to be sent in order to generate some revenue, why not make it clear, and even better, let the user choose?
