I would recommend to file a feature request in Bugzilla. Please add a note that when implementing this, we should check the response code if possible to prevent e.g. wasting time when the error is due to a failed password, etc -- the IMAP protocol actually contains an optional feature where the server can tell us stuff like "your account is already expired, please talk to a human operator at $address now".
