Well that is a positive way of putting it.  I was inclined to say that Dennis sometimes uses ambiguities and vagueness.  And this is probably OK in most cases, if you, so to speak, take the bull by the horns, do something, running things the way that seem right (best) for you at the time you run them. You are different from everybody else, so how could you expect one very, very specific sentence (command) to work for everybody?

He was, after all, writing for everybody (unless he was only writing for himself :-) ).

When you ask for an explanation on the list, you get what is right for the person explaining (at the time s/he writes).
