I tried re-installing both trplayer and realplayer with no change. Decided
.mailcap had to be the source of the problem. sure enough! And apparently
this is how the mailcapstuff.tar.gz sets up the .mailcap, because I
removed .mailcap (after making a copy elsewhere under different name) and
then did "tar xzf mailcapstuff.tar.gz) again. Here is a copy of .mailcap.
I don't even have "aplay" on my system. Given that I am going to
reinstall freeamp since I now know it wasn't causing the problem, on
which lines should I leave freeamp and on which should I substitute
trplayer, and what should I substitute for aplay? I think that maybe aplay
and arecord are part of alsautils, and I'm not running alsa.
