> Blainer) If you are including the polygamous groups, you are probably
right. Polygamy seems to have a life of its own. I have seen several
polygamous men and women shopping in stores, eating in restaurants, here
and there in Utah. They always seem plainly dressed, the women wearing
long opaque stockings, no makeup and hair in braids--all working together
to make them appear as unattractive as possible, I suppose. They are
always easy to identify--sometimes I see two or even three women with one
man. My son became acquainted with a polygamous boy here in Salt Lake
City--his dad had at least seven "wives." I talked to the dad a number
of times. He was a well-spoken individual, who had an insurance
business. He told me he had disavowed polygamy, but he still had the
women to take care of. I think the disavowel was for public consumption
only. One of his wives could not bear children, so he took the youngest
son of his first wife and placed him with the woman--who btw was a school
teacher. The woman depended on the boy a lot for emotional support, and
she let him have the run of the house and come and go as he pleased. He
was pretty wild and lawless, as kids go. But like his father, he was a
good con-artist and very verbally talented. His dad had been
excommunicated from the Mormon church for his polygamy, as had all the
wives. Hmmmm, I do not envy these people--they are not well accepted in
Mormon communities, and their children all seem to consider it OK to
flaunt the law, besides being social pariahs. Most of the women who get
sucked into polygamy wish they had not done so. It is a hard
life--consider how difficult it would be for one man in today's economy
to support all those women!! Some are successful in doing so, but it
seems most end up putting the women and children on state welfare. Tom
Green, the famous polygamist, was prosecuted recently as you are probably
aware, and one of the charges was welfare fraud. Poygamy may have worked
years ago in an agracultural society, but does not work very often
nowadays.
