All I can tell you is that it worked for me when I was in Arizona and Washington this year.  I also have a dial up connection, and my home computer was also shut off. It even worked to check my daughter's mail when her computer crashed. Still got the messages.  It may make a difference if you are using a lap top.  I have never used one, never even seen one.
