I'm tracking with you, Pete--still
thinking about it, and i suspect there others here who have some real insight
into it..did you (or anyone else on TT) hear Springsteen and the E Street
Band virtually uninterrupted on TV last night? What did you think? One
could be slightly jealous (perhaps--eh?:-) What could best explain his
success and rising popularity of late?

1 Sam 19
9 But an evil spirit from the LORD came upon Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the harp,

Hey Gary.
I have actually been doing well. I started taking a hard look about what I was doing and what I supposed to be doing and found that I needed to spend more time reading God's Word and fellowshipping with him rather than arguing on-line. I am still a little hesitant about participating because I have seen a lot of junk appear on discussion groups and I don't see the purpose or the value. What I have been doing is studying the book of Galatians for the past year. I decided to drop in again to truthtalk when David told me there was a discussion concerning the Law. This was in line with what I have been reading, so I just decided to take a peek. Another book I have been studying is the book of Hebrews.
To tell you the honest truth about what was going on with me was that I just wanted to get to know JESUS better and didn't want any other thing. Doctrines and theology started to turn my stomach and I just wanted a better relationship with Him. I believe the Lord turned my attention to the book of Galatians since Paul had a revelation of Jesus and the reason why He came. I want that same revelation and working knowledge so that I can experience Him and know Him better.
I don't claim to be an expert about how music works and the principles involved, but here is my take. I am heavily involved in music as an educator and as a player who plays in a local orchestra. I am telling you this so that you know that my experience is not from a casual listener, but from someone who does this for a living.
The reference you cited, as you know, refers to an incident provoked by jealousy. An earlier reference concerning Saul and David showed a much different picture.
1Sa 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
When the Spirit of the Lord departs, an evil spirit is sure to follow.
1Sa 16:15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
His servants recognized that Saul was troubled by an evil spirit. They could not do anything about it. They did know of a solution.
1Sa 16:16 Let our lord now command thy servants, [which are] before thee, to seek out a man, [who is] a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
So, they found David to possess a skill in music.
1Sa 16:23 And it came to pass, when the [evil] spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him
BUT, BEFORE ALL THIS HAPPENED, READ THIS ONE VERSE WHICH PROCEEDS THIS.
1Sa 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
The Spirit of the Lord was upon David. I believe that this is important when trying to understand music and it's function within the framework of knowing what is Spiritual music. Music that breaks the bonds of a tormented person needs the Spirit of the Lord present for it to work effectively. Music by itself can make a person become nostalgic, happy, sad, agitated, peaceful or any other emotion.
Let me know what you think so far.
Pete
