David,

I'm not sure I understand your question. Of course both of them are guilty
of breaking the 10 commandments. Only Bill would be a criminal in our
culture. Of course Bill did a worse thing by injuring (not loving) another
person while disobeying (not loving) God. Fred just disobeyed (did not love)
God. Is that what you were asking?

I thought the articles made many good points, but the author misses it when
he emphasizes keeping the Ten Commandments the way that he does. We either
obtain righteousness by grace through faith or by keeping the law (Romans
10:1-13). He seems to understand that we ought not use the doctrine of
grace to excuse sin, but he goes back to the righteousness which comes by
the law when he emphasizes the need to keep the Ten Commandments.

Izzy, let me ask you a question. Suppose there are two men named Bill and
Fred. Bill watches Fred gather three sticks of wood on Saturday for his
fireplace. Bill then goes over to Fred's house later that same day and
takes up rocks and beats Fred to death with those rocks. Which of these men
would be considered sinners according to the Ten Commandments? Which of
these men would be considered criminals according to the laws of our
culture?

Also, do you see any moral difference between the crime of a man murdering
another man and the crime of a man gathering a few sticks of wood on
Saturday? Please be honest and tell me what you think. These are difficult
questions, but they go right to the heart of the idea of Sabbath keeping.

If we can discuss these questions, I might take time to critique his
analysis of Hebrews. I think he missed the point there.

Peace be with you.
