DAVEH: So, are you troubled that it was used as a historical marker, Perry?
Compared to many other Masonic symbols used by the LDS, the obelisk does not seem to be one of the major ones and, as far as I know, does not adorn LDS temples like many other Masonic symbols. The obelisk does have singnificance to Masons, and I do not know the motive behind its being used at JS's birthplace.
DAVEH: Is that an indictment of my religion?
Not necessarily. Since JS was a Mason, it probably is just a symbol of his allegiance to his Masonic brothers, or a tribute to him with respect to his Masonic association. It would be interesting to know the details of who placed it there, and what was said at the dedication.
