I would imagine that the gold and other gifts came at just the right time to finance a trip to Egypt. The carpentry business had no power tools in those days, so a hand saw, chisel, square, and hammer would put you in business at a reasonable price.
What I am trying to figger Is , what would a priest want with a turtle? He ain't allowed to eat one!
Terry, Very interesting. I always thought she brought them because of the scripture below. And it seemed that we just assumed they were poor. (When I grew up we considered anyone who could afford his own business to be well off. J) Do you think they were still poor after receiving the gifts from the magi? Maybe thats how they were able to afford to set up a carpentry business? Izzy
Lev 15:19 And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even.
28 But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. 29 And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Terry, I must have missed it; which scripture says Mary and Joseph were poor? Izzy
