DavidM: Blaine and DaveH, Does Kevin have this right?  Do you Mormons believe that Adam and Eve
walked in obedience, and that their eating of the fruit of the tree was not a sin?

DAVEH:  That is correct, DavidM.  How could A&E have sinned, IF they did not know right from wrong?

Judy:
They didn't have to know right from wrong DaveH, they disobeyed. Sin is defined as transgressing
God's Law - all they had was one command.  Don't eat of the tree in the middle of the garden. They
did. She was deceived and he made the choice but the outcome was the same for both of them.

DAVEH:
Once they transgressed by partaking of the forbidden fruit, they then had acquired knowledge of
'good and evil' and were capable of sinning.  Until then, they merely transgressed, with the
(pre-explained) resulting effect being death.

Judy:
So far as God is concerned transgressing is sinning. It's one and the same....

DAVEH:
I haven't studied this to much depth, so I am sticking my neck out......please be gentle when you lop it off!  But.....is there any place in the Bible where A&E's eating of the forbidden fruit is referred to as a sin, or......do the Bible authors simply refer to it as a transgression? It seems to me that (original) sin was attributed to Adam's transgression in post Biblical traditions of the apostate church.

Judy: This is the teaching of scripture independent of men's traditions. Scripture teaches that Eve was deceived but Adam who chose to go with her rather than to take a stand was in the transgression.  This is why it was BY ONE MAN that sin entered the world.

DAVEH:   Look at it another way, DavidM.  If you tell your 3 year old child that they should not pet a particular dog even if it looks friendly and fun to play with.  But the choice is theirs....IF they pet the dog, the dog will bite them.  So.....the dog looks so inviting, you kid goes ahead and pets the fluffy critter who then bites your child.  Would you consider their desire (and resulting action of petting the dog) to be a sin???

Judy:  Not a good analogy DAVEH since you/we are not God and since Adam was not a child. He was created full grown, an adult who was held responsible for his choices.

DAVEH: Now let me ask you a question, DavidM.....Do you believe in the original sin of Adam?  It is my understanding that this is a Catholic doctrine.  Has it been widely adopted by Protestants too?

Judy: Obviously I'm not DavidM - but the original sin of Adam is not a RC doctrine, it is the teaching of scripture. Do Mormon people read the scriptures - or take them seriously DAVEH?

Judy
