It seems to me that there is a spiritual reason and a human reason.
Somewhere in the bible it tells us that we'll know true teachers and
prophets by their fruits, i.e. their actions. If a leader or teacher or
prophet does bad things, then he is not really of God. (In addition to
JS, many of the popes are good examples of this.)
On a human level, we naturally don't trust politicians who
demonstrate that they are untrustworthy. It's natural to use that same
standard with those who claim to be spiritual leaders. You can't get good
fruit from a bad tree, said Jesus.
