NASV -- hands down.  New English Translation is good.  It has over 60,000 general and technical notes.  The folks have a web site.  Their goal is to get the Bible into as many hands as possible. New Living Bible is  also very good.  

As far as critiquing the actual mss  ---  you and Kevin are the first on that one and I have been around a long time.  Got to go polish my walker.  The bible is as we know it, is the result of a comparative study of various and ancient sources, as you well know.  If God gave it to us, it was through the "providential" route.  KJV is fine, I might add.  But there are others that certainly just as good if not better.  Right?
