Apparently "taking it personal" for you is actually "being too hard on yourself."
I worked with a fellow for several years who was quite the complainer. He always felt he was singled out by the boss to do the more difficult tasks. One day he angrily said to me (complaining of being taken advantage of) " Every time I look in the mirror, I remind myself of a jackass." I have laughed about that for over 20 years now. Your line made me think of that.
