Jt, You are so right—one BIG reason the church is so sinful is because we don’t have men who have the gumption to enforce godly authority/discipline in their own body of believers.  Your son-in-law might become embittered for a short time, but if you keep praying I am sure he will come around to seeing this a big opportunity to learn a hard but important lesson.  Life is a school of hard knocks.  (Better to lose money than something more precious. After all—“It’s only money”. J ) Izzy

I agree Izzy and this is what is so troubling to me.  The pastor had not dealt at all with the conman who is still in leadership as I write but he did talk to our son-in-law about examining his own motives.  I do see your point about his culpability.  At the start of the "business" venture my husband asked him if he was sure this was the way to go and his reply was that he thought it was because his partner was a "godly" man.  His partner didn't lose money on stocks or anything like that; he mishandled it, paying himself $8,000 per month before the business got off the ground and taking out a line of business credit on the quiet.  Thanks for sharing how God used similar circumstances in your life, I hope our son-in-law will be able to regroup without becoming embittered over this.  Noone keeping the wolf away from the door at that Church.  jt
